Resumo: When placing a piece of wood under the action of heat, there will be a series of gradual transformations of its components that will degrade in different and successive ways. Between the initial state wood to the final stage charcoal occurs different complex reactions that are object of curiosity all over the world. Some questions have already been elucidated, and much of the kinetics of carbonization is reported by models known as Kanury and Blackshear (1970) and Holmes (s.d). The main forms of heat transfer and mass that occurs during the pyrolysis, as well as the speed of these processes are approached by these models. Brazil has a tradition of production and use on an industrial scale of charcoal inserts variables that can modify the basic models and need clarification. Some of them relate the access of heat to the interior of wood pieces with distinct physical, chemical and mechanical characteristics as well as the difficulty of controlling the emissions of some polluting gases (CO, NO, NOx) and particulates requires investigation of these known models. In this context, some researchers from Brazil and France, with the support of laboratories and research centers with precise analytical tools, establish a cooperation agreement aiming to establish answers and parameters for the interaction of several variables of wood pyrolysis.
